Reading is a skill that your child will need throughout school and in their day-to-day life. They will begin reading between the ages of 5 and 7 at school and will need your help at home to improve. Aside from its role in education, it gives children access to explore different hobbies and interests while promoting a lifelong love for learning. We have teamed up with a pre-prep in Worthing to share why reading is so important for children below.
Exercising the Brain
Unlike other activities, reading keeps the brain active. Children must use their imagination to envision what is happening as books have either limited pictures or none at all. They also must use their problem-solving skills and reading ability to correctly read words.
Discovery
Through books, children can learn about a vast range of things. They can learn about animals, different parts of the world and find new interests. This can help them to broaden their understanding of the world and themselves.

A Strengthened Relationship
Story time can help to foster strong parent-child relationships. For some of us, our fondest childhood moments are from bedtime where we were told night-time stories all snuggled up in bed. You can build the same memories with your children and help them to feel closer to you through reading.
Imagination
As touched on earlier, reading relies on imagination. Children need it to piece things together and set scenes in their head. They are also left guessing about what may happen next and are encouraged to formulate their own ideas, helping them to build upon their creative thinking skills.
Sleep
A less challenging book can make for a nice unwinding activity to do before bed. If your child struggles to sleep, one can help them to relax and go to sleep.
