Helping Your Child Develop their Fine Motor Skills

For children, the ability to pick things up, tie things together and even grip doesn’t come until later. It comes with practice which helps them to develop what are known as fine motor skills. They are the skills needed to generate such movements in the smaller muscle tissues of the body found in the hands, feet, and toes. To help your child build their fine motor skills, we have a list of activities that you can do with them from a nursery that provides childcare in Richmond.

Rice Race

You can practice picking with your child using two bowls of uncooked rice and two other empty bowls. Show them how to pick them up and place them in the empty bowl. Once they get the hang of it, you can have some fun and turn it into a race.

Velcro Straps

Velcro can be fun to mess around with and gives your child a way to learn gripping. There are many Velcro toys out there that you can find. Alternatively, you can opt for any child safe item in your house with a bit of it on.

Bubble Wrap

Bubble wrap can keep any child (or adult) entertained for hours. It’s a way that you can get your child to practise pressing and all it requires is some empty packaging.

Bath Time

Bath time means bubbles and squeezy toys. They can help you to keep your child occupied while you bath them and help them to practice their squeezing at the same time.

Arts and crafts

Arts and crafts supplies are very dainty. There are lots of fine motor skills that your child can practise while making their own work of art. They can learn how to grip while they open and close their felts, hold as they colour and press as they stick things down.
